Max Galatas, Gunnell's friend from high school, reached out to SportsDay for clarification. He said Gunnell's gesture was towards his group of friends, Galatas included. Galatas said Gunnell responded that way because they were giving him a hard time.

"He's a walk-on for the team and we always joke around with him about that," Galatas said. "We started a, 'We want Will!' chant, and as they were running into the tunnel, we were calling out for him. And he was laughing and flipped us off as a joke."

"(Will) loves A&M just like everyone else, and we all support the team no matter what."

Head coach Kevin Sumlin said he heard about the incident during halftime.

Sumlin's statement: "I was made aware of it at halftime, and we dealt with it at halftime. He did not return to the field. He's since issued an apology. He's embarrassed, and we'll handle whatever disciplinary action this week with him internally."

Gunnell, a freshman receiver for the Aggies, expressed his dismay after A&M went into halftime with a 21-14 deficit to Louisiana Lafayette. His brother, Grant, is A&M's top quarterback commit for the class of 2019.
