Southwest Airlines to honor former Sooners punter, airline worker killed in shooting with flyover before Bedlam game

Southwest Airlines will honor former employee and Oklahoma football player Mike Winchester with a flyover before Saturday's Bedlam game in Norman, Okla., OU announced Thursday.

Winchester was a punter for the Sooners from 1984-86 and a member of Oklahoma's 1985 national championship team. He was shot and killed on Nov. 15 outside of Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, where he worked for Southwest for 29 years. Winchester was 52.

To honor its longtime employee, Southwest Airlines will fly a Boeing 737 over Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, weather permitting.

Twenty members of Winchester's family will be on the field pregame for a moment of silence, including his son James, who played football for OU and is a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, and daughters Carolyn and Rebecca, who competed on OU's women's basketball and rowing squads. Winchester's wife, Julie, as well as daughters Emilyne and Katie and son John will be in attendance.
